Sorry for my tardiness updating this blog.
Lots to talk about.
60 stalls - including a coffee van at the front door - and cupcakes inside ... sustenance aplenty.
Variety is something we have strived to deliver for NICHE during 2011 and I think those attending the events this year have found a few little extras.
Notable successes were the arrival of Yondover Dairy (goats cheeses) and some very beautifully made items for big people.
While we love to be able to deliver quality children's items, we believed it was time for Niche to go forward and provide some high-quality, hand-made foods as well as some beautiful, one-off pieces in homewares and fashion.
Why, we even found a space from some very finely presented herbs and hazelnuts during 2011!
In three weeks we will present NICHE November 18 and 19 - at the Tramsheds, Launceston.
For the first time, our stallholders will be 60 in number and be accommodated across FOUR rooms.
Unfortunately, the extra rooms will NOT be available to NICHE during 2012 - so make the most of the chance to shop till your heart's content and your wallet's empty.
Many more of our stallholders are offering credit card services, but we advise you prepare in advance with CASH.

It's been awhile

Dear follower,

We are still here, we just got a little lost. Liz left after the last market to have her baby (a girl called Jillian) and the office just got a little snowed under.

We now look forward to the next market on 19th & 20th August. There were several other babies almost due at the last market so we look forward to seeing all our little niche babies and what lovely treats their mummies can buy them.

A new facebook page has just be launched, so pop over & "like" our page as the other 2 old niche sites will close down in about a week.

Can't wait too see all your new products in a few weeks.

Living off cup-cakes and coke ... like sands through the hour-glass .... so is the life of a stallholder at Niche. Last weekend's Niche Market at the Launceston Tramsheds has been rated as the best so far. What are your thoughts? Some 7000 shoppers made their way through two rooms during Friday evening and Saturday until 4pm. This Niche had 19 new stallholders among the 40 present. The August market will introduce 25 new stallholders to the mix. Time to get making. Feedback so far includes: ``This will be the next Deloraine Craft Fair'' ``Leaves Salamanca for dead.'' ``It's the market all up-coming makers are talking about''. The venue worked a treat and will make an August market something to look forward to ... rain, hail or shine we know it will be warm and cosy at Niche.

Well how much fun was that!

First thank you has to be to all our stall holder's. All the email's we got before hand asking about height restriction, desplaying art around the whole building or can I get tree's delivered, paid off the stall's looked AMAZING. You all put so much heart and soul into them this time around. The ambiance was overwheleming.

Big well done to our very nervous newbies. We had 19 stall at this market that either hadn't been to Niche for a very long time or were newbies to the market. You all tip toed in looking so scared, but by 4:10pm you'd all had a sale or two and were into the swing of things.

Second thank you has to be to the customers, if you didn't come in your thousands and part with your hard earned there would be no Niche-all wrapped up and no $$$ going to St Giles. Once we have some idea of $$$ we will let you know.

Well, St Giles fundraising team are having lunch together today with our families and what a beautiful day for it. We can sit outside, sip a cool lemonade and discuss all things Niche and what we shall do for August. Thoughts, ideas and feedback welcome...

At last our first Niche market of 2011 is almost here.

The Examiner was in at St Giles today getting info for an article that we hope appears tomorrow. The TV community notice boards have been plugging it non-stop & all our fab stall holders have been blogging about it, tagging as on Facebook & spreading the word where ever they go.

New stall's this time included a florist, artwork, home wares, herbs and toys. Plus many of your favourites have new product to launch at this market.

So come cashed up & ready to shop, all with the knowledge that 20% of your purchase price will be donated to St Giles Society (www.stgiles.org.au). A small display for how St Giles spent the $18,500 donated from Niche in 2010 will be there.

Almost there...

Oh I can't wait, we are almost ready for our first market of the year.

We are loving watching all the blog & facebook posts appear of all the new product lines our stall holders are doing.

We just wish to remind you all that most of our stall holders only accept cash. This includes the bar which will be open on Friday night from 5pm-8pm.

This makes Niche the perfect outing... you can shop & hubby can have a beer. So much nicer when you don't have "what do you need another one of those for" "or what a waste of money" in your ear every two seconds.

With the 8th of April fast approaching and my date with the sofa gets closer my shoes have been filled...kind of.

Peter Darrow is our new Events Coordinator at St Giles and will be your contact for Niche-all wrapped up after the said date.

Danielle Blewett whom many of you meet at the November market is still here as our Communications & PR Manager and my job (office assistant) will be left unfilled while I am on leave and Peter & Danielle will spend the next 12 months building up our events program .

But on the subject of filling shoes...my baby will be able to fill these divine shoe's from Black Eyed Suzie. Can't wait to spoil this baby at Niche....3 weeks to go so get off the computer & get stitching, gluing, painting, cooking & designing!

Well I don't think we have had a hot summer this year in Tassie & due to Queensland's weather none of us could afford watermelon anyway.

So as a supplement in 2011 the Niche-all wrapped up logo colour will be watermelon!

Well at last the hard job of deciding which applications were successful is complete.

Thank you to our committee members for all their help. It isn't easy deciding on 140 stall for 3 markets when you have over 200 applications.

There is a fine balance between having regulars and new stall holders.

And this time I think they have done a great job. Lots more new and exciting stalls, the variety this year look sensational, but your old favourites will still be there too.

All applications should have received either a yes or no email by now.

Once stall holders for our April market have confirmed they wish to attend we will publish a list for you all to ohhh & ahhh over.

Keep your eyes open for the next edition of the Launceston Times due out on 24/1/11. The lovely Kate Clifford from the Examiner called in yesterday and has written a story about Niche. I also gave her a list of Launceston based stall holders from the November market as she wishes to include 4-5 of them in a story.

It was perfect timing as 2 boxes arrived in the morning. One was full of all kinds of hydrotherapy equipment, the other box had several communication device in it with a combined value of over $1400 (one is pictured here). Our therapist's were all very excited to get their hands on some much need new equipment and hopefully the rest will arrive soon so that our 2,500 Launceston based clients can start to access what you all helped us to purchase. The difference you have made in their quailty of life is overwhelming.

Niche never really stops amazing me. As we are starting to get flooded with applications, it's amazing to see that even mainlander's are applying for Niche. Yes we do give preference to Tasmanian designer's , but if we come across a must have designer that is doing something Niche can't live without (or I can't live without) and nobody from Tasmania has applied doing something similar then they are in!

Not only are they (the mainlander's) appling but I have also had 2 emails already asking when will the next Niche be on as people have heard about it and were wondering if the next market would coincide with their holiday to Tassie. Sadly I had to tell them that it didn't.

All this in just 2 years from that first market back in November 2008, where will Niche be in another 2 years...

Christmas Cheer

Think of all the Christmas cheer that was created through Niche- all wrapped up in 2010. Stall holders made money to buy gifts, customers found gifts, people opened lovely gifts on Christmas Day and most of all the cheer of the children's faces at St Giles when all the knew equipment arrives in January purchased with the money raised at Niche.

We have had about 6 or 7 emails bounce back. If you haven't not received an email from us please email strangel@stgiles.org.au and once St Giles opens again in January we will resend the info. Applications don't close until 28/11/2011 so you will have plenty of time to apply.

Looking forward to getting the applications back...not looking forward to declining some :(

Well I have most of the figures sorted. Just waiting on the odd invoice & donation. I am hoping next week I can let you all know how much you helped raise for St Giles in 2010 and what it will be going towards.

Feed back from our Christmas Niche has been great. A few points we hadn't thought of before like an info board with what St Giles has done with the money from Niche or a donation tin on each stall. Other feed back mention not enough varity...sales hasn't reflected this, but I do agree 100%.

Dates are almost confirmed for 2011, 99.9% of the way there & applications will be out before Christmas. Don't forget to apead the word that anybody wishing to be included in the 2011 markets need to email strangel@stgiles.org.au

Well that is Niche all wrapped up for 2010 AND WHAT AN ENDING! Wow is all I have to say. It was just amazing.

Friday night people started coming through the door around 3.30ish. By 5 I hit panic & at 6 when I notice people were lining up outside to get in I almost died. It was then we decided to book a second room for the following day & spread out a little more. Thank god we did as the people didn't slow down on Saturday either. We think we had over 6000 through the door.

I just want to say thank you to our lovely stall holders for being so patient with us & to the crowd sorry we just didn't expect that number of people. It was double our normal figure. We know we need even more room next time as nobody could move let alone shop.

Well done all it was a top 2 days!

Are you all still madly putting things together?

I am amazed at home many emails & phone calls I have had about Niche this week. Well today actually as I haven't been in the office Mon/Tue. So many people wanting to be added to our stall holder list & advertising list. Word sure has spread well this time around.

May have to have a little think about venue etc next time. I'd love everyones feed back on past & current venues. But I really do think I now have close to 180 stall holders on the application list. With only 40-50 spots up for grabs it makes it so hard. If the Tramshed's are successful maybe next time I will book both of their room. We could get 80 or so stall's in then. We still wouldn't be able to fit everyone in & some I'm sorry would still be offend. But we just can't seem to find away to fit you all. So thoughts please so we can keep you all happy.

I can't get over how many of our great stall holder's have got new products they are launching at Niche on Friday night

I just noticed these cuff links on Sara Kitty Design's facebook page, along with lots of other nice goodies. But lovely to see something for the boys! So with the bar open on Friday night the boys can have a beer, find something for their beautiful partner & their self! Not sure you need cuff links on a flanny though and seeing that's about all my farmer husband wears sadly I will not be purchasing these lovely ones.

I am getting excited. Every time I jump on line, somebody seems to have something new they will be bring to Niche. I really am worried about how much I will spend...

Perfect Timing

I have just broken a pair of earring's I got at the last Niche. I think this is perfect timing. I like some of these ones from Adore U. I am sure I will have to get a few pairs because if I break some more I may not be at the next Niche as baby is due around then!

Well that's how I'll explain it to my husband anyway!

I think we are all ready to go. I will have every body's receipt with me on Friday for your deposits. Sorry about that. The new system has been a nightmare.

I need to decided how to design/organise/decorate our table. As mentioned before we will be doing the gift wrapping and that takes up a lot of room.

I have held back 1 road sign that I will put up near the roundabout/car park entrance, need to remember our tear drop banners and was thinking I might bring a few of the DL flyer's and stick on the paying machines for parking to catch people who were heading else where & didn't know the market was on.

I can't imagine how busy you all are finishing things off and I sure you all wish your kids were still asleep at 9.30am like my little boy is right now. Go Freddie go!

Where does my cash go?

So have you ever thought, gee where did 20% of my purchases or 20% of my stall takings at Niche go?

Our current program we are trying to fund at the moment is called "I like to move it". Wheelchairs aren't funded in anyway & if a child needs one the family can be looking at a price anywhere upto $30,000. Remembering that kids grown out of their chair like they do of their clothes. This isn't just a once off expensive. We'd love to have a pool of chairs for our clients to use.

We have a gig!

I have landed myself & Sophie from That Vintage a gig. I call it a "gig" for 2 reasons. One it makes me less nervous & 2 it makes me feel famous! Our "gig" is on ABC local radio on Thursday 18th at 7.20am.

I better organise myself a little cheat sheet so I don't say "um" too many times.

As it is our Christmas Niche, St Giles will be selling Christmas cards & offering gift wrapping for a donation.

Our Christmas Cards are great. Our clients have drawn them for us. Inside the card is blank, on the back it says the child's name & age followed by the St Giles logo. Cards are $5 for a 6 pack or bulk orders will be taken.

Our gift wrapping service will be done by yours truly. We have some lovely paper & will wrap them elegantly for you. No set charge for this service we are asking for a donation instead.

The thing I hate about Niche...

The worst part about Niche is being pregnant. I had the same problem for the first & second Niche and now for the 7th.

I don't like finding out if it's a boy or girl & even if I did, I will not have had my 20 week scan by Niche so wouldn't know anyway.

All those great things like this Loz & Dinny dress and I don't know if it's a boy or girl so I just have to look and day dream...

I must say though somebody could make a killing on little boys things as there doesn't seem to be much out there compared to things for girls. Shame I am not as talented as the rest of you. The idea of being a stay at home mum & doing the markets is very appealing!

Humble Pie

It has been a long time since I remember Selena in the fundraising office at St Giles talking about starting a design market. I can remember telling her I thought it wasn't going to work, okay so I didn't say it that nicely. I hate humble pie!

Indeco have been with us from Day 1, this photo was at the very first Niche. Perfect gifts for that person you don't know what to get or the overseas relo's.

Niche is now officially SOLD OUT. I have had a few cancellations this week, but with our huge waiting list those spots were snapped up. I would also like to thank which ever stall holders were putting the word out at Deloraine. I wish I had kept count of the phone calls I have had this week. Great feed back, people asking for stalls & posters. So thank you to whoever did the hard work you have drummed up a huge amount of business for us all.

I declare November, Nichember, let the fun, shopping, laughter, bargins & new friendships begin.

I can't wait to see what new lines my old favourites have & to have a good rummage through the new stall holder's goodies!

I can almost be dressed by Niche some days. My lovely Hideyo skirt, my Red Wren top, earings from every 2nd stall, a scarf from Behind The Door, my beautiful hat from Foal & my That Vintage brooch...shoes I am missing Niche shoes & if i have a wash with Natural Infusion soap I am completely Niche all wrapped up!

The Behind The Door scarf I might add, was loved so much by a girlfriend back in the UK when we were there in March I have since sent her one. See you never know where Niche sales might end up???

The first person to let me know they have spotted a Niche road sign wins a radom prize... in other words I am not sure what the prize is yet. But I know 2 signs are up and the rest should be soon.

Andrew, at 1 stop sticker shop on High Street & the guys at Natural Infusion have done a great job with our road signs which they donated all their time, effort & money towards.

Also Sophie from That Vintage & Marg from An Element of Style have both done a huge letter drop with our posters. I'm sure a few other's have picked up posters too, but the girls in the office couldn't remember your name, so thank you to the forgotten people too!

I have just been up to the 1 stop sticker shop on High Street to collect our Niche road signs. Gee they look good. Hopefully our handyman Greg will be out & about to put them up tomorrow afternoon.

Exciting news in the land of Niche

Well it's a balmy afternoon & all has run so smoothly today....with 3 great thing happening

The first was the bar will be open for stall holders & shoppers to enjoy a nice glass of champer's or what ever takes your fancy while you shop or sell at Niche on the Friday evening. Bar will be open from 5-8pm. I do believe it is CASH ONLY!

The second was the lovely Gemma aka Loz & Dinny dropped into St Giles today & I got to see her two beautiful baby boys. THEY ARE SO CUTE!

And the 3rd which is just FANTASTIC and better then both of the above Dan & Darren from Natural Infusion have arranged 6 road signs to be designed & printed for Niche. So I am hoping in the next week & a bit you will notice them around town.

Let's hope this weather lasts the weekend!

Changing of the Guard + Nov Niche

There is exciting news in Niche land - St Giles will now internally manage Niche. I will remain as a member of the selection committee but I will not be coordinating the market anymore. The contact will now be Liz Strange who will be the coordinator. Liz is a fantstic organiser and great to deal with and I know that St Giles has some great plans for Niche 2011. Please keep emailing nicheallwrappedup@live.com if you have any queries until we have worked out all the transitional requirements.
I just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone, especially all the stall holders that have been involved in Niche since Nov 08...I have enjoyed meeting and working with everyone and I know that Niche will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Once the market is over I always have a couple of quiet (?) days of reflection and disappointment that it is over, until the next Niche.

This one was different having the two locations...I gotta say not as good as whilst each venues designers linked/chatted...everyone was not together...so I think we should go backto one!

Friday was really quiet....which was quite different from the Nov markets so we will have to look at that do...but enought about the not so good bits...love any comments on this blog to help us work on the 2011 strategy!

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE I SEEN AROUND TOWN WEARING A FOAL DESIGN HAT...and yep you saw them first at Niche...Rosie's hats rock!!!! and then the jewellery from My Mother Mabel...oh I coveted one of those little beauties but maybe next time as I did my dash on few other beautiful items...head over to the facebook page to see some photos...

November Confirmations

I know every applicant is keen to know if they have been successful for Novmeber but we have decided to see how the two venues go in August and then decide how many we can have involved.....so if people can wait until the first week of September it is appreciated....

The August market is now going to run over 2 days ... Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of August.....

We will have the two sites - the boathouse and the University Gallery at Inveresk...fine weather a nice meander along the river or use the bus that will run every 20 minutes between the venues.

Getting excited as there are some fantastic new designers as well as the fact that we are part of Junction 2010...

Confirmations August Market

Emails have been sent and confirmation received from our 55 stall holders for the August Niche - held as part of Junction 2010.

I know that a lot of applicants are very disappointed that they were not included but we had over 100 applicants. I know I always say it but the depth and breadth of talent across this state is amazing, but that also makes it hard for the committee to decide. With the November market as well were are trying to make sure that as many stall holders as possible will be included across both markets and we take into consideration the preferences provided on the application forms!

The confirmations for November market will be out by the end of next week!

Again we are sorry we can not have everyone - but if someone knows of a venue big enough to house 90+ stall holder please let me know!

Stall Holders

There are so many fab new stall holders for this Niche - it is terribly exciting! And we have them coming from the coast and the south....but some people have asked about the ol' favourites like Loz & Dinny....twins on the way there!...black eyed susie...two children, so no chance recently to make enough stock...paris+tasmania, tara badcock...expecting as well....hope there was nothing in the water at the last Niche! But even so I am sure that there will be some new favourites.....

SPREAD THE WORD - IT's Back for Mum

Okay - we are on track for the 1st Niche market of 2010...

We have so many newbies, a few oldies - but still goodies and a great venue. We have over 35 stalls of homewares, jewellery, gourmet goodies, clothing, art and the odd bit and bob!

Spread the word to all who gravitate towards shiny things, tactile dreamers and people with talent, spread the word that they have to be at the Boat house, Lindsay St at the end of the month to support local designers and children with disabilities.

- Just incase you did not know the last Niche raised over $7000 for St Giles, with more than 3000 people coming through the doors - or so I am told...as I was in labor when all this happend, but not this time...I will be there with bells on to see all the new stall holders!

Ta Da...we have a venue - the boat house......on northbank otherwise known to locals as the north esk rowing club....we can house over 40 stall holders and it promises to be bigger than...my tummy after Easter!...but all jokes aside the applications for 2010 have been of the highest quality and so many of them...it has been really hard for the committee to choose who and make sure we give as many people as possible a go.

Thank you to all that have applied..we will be in contact by Saturday with confirmations.

It never ceases to aamaze me the amount of people who have hidden talents, there are so many in our fantastic community.

The Next Niche...

Oh my how time flys....the next Niche will be held on Friday 31st april, 1/2nd May....the only thing we do not know yet is the venue!!! The Uni has some absolutely amazing national exhibitions coming and they include large installations and as such the market can not be held there so.....

We are looking for somewhere else! Have been hunting and should have a venue locked in this week.

Also for all those who have contacted me regarding applying for the market the applications will go out this week for all of the markets to be held this year - and we are ramping up for three, with the addition of an August market!

Looking really forward to holding this one and seeing all the old and new talent out there!

One of the most challenging things about being a designer, mother, wife/partner, creative type is that sometimes things in life pop up and we can not do everything we want to do! Such is the timing for a few of our Niche holders that will not be at this weekends Niche - Sadly Tara Badcock, Who Did that and Poppleberry Puddings are unable to come along anymore...multiple reasons...and we are all incredibly disappointed as these people not only have a wealth of wonderful products but are gorgeous to boot. They have all promised me that they will be available for the next Niche though!

Please do not let this deter you from coming along as there is still over 25 stalls of fantastically talented people with wonderful Christmas products going to be in attendance!

Trouble...

I know that there have not been many posts on here - but I am having trouble uploading pictures and in all honesty the pictures of the designers work is far more appealing than my dribble.

I have to say though that the pictures of new products from people like Sophie from That Vintage, Dora from Dick and Dora, and new loz and dinny items are just too gorgeous for words - but given my picture issue you are just going to have to take my word for it!

We will have all the promotional material out next week and I am really excited to say that the team at Cowley's have done another fantastic job on it..they are clever clots there!

With only three weeks to go it is all hands on board and I know the designers are working hard to make sure they have enough product to go for three days!!!!

Where do I start - or with Whom do I start?

Wanting to start with a big bang and given that I had teased about our new 'Nichies' I thought it best I start with Who Did That? This is contemporary low-energy lighting too goreous to be true!!! The sensational Loz Abberton makes the most amazing flat pak chandeliers, standeliers (floor and desk lamps) and Grandeliers fabricated from either eco-resin or Forestry Stewardship Council veneered ply! Whew!!! + lightweight stainless steel designs to create your own bespoke lamp shade or pendant light.
Loz is a local lass...here in Sunny (rainy?) Launceston who is creating amazing designs, selling them world wide and is making her Niche debut! Very excited to have her onboard this market and if her wacky emails are anything to go by (and her company logo) it should be a barrell of laughs!

Stall Holders

It is without a doubt the hardest part of organising Niche - having incredibly talented people contact me wanting to be a part of Niche, and deservingly so as their work, creativity and personal beauty is exactly what Niche is about! We have a great, but limited space, the Art Gallery gives us as much space as they can but we just can not take anyone else at this stage. Please still contact me as I will make sure you get an application for the next one, people may have to pull out and/or we might be able to create more space through some sites outside but that is not definete at this stage!

In writing this I would love to see Niche become a permanent fixture somewhere in Launceston...we just need the right venue......ahhh it is good to dream!

Full Steam Ahead

Finally I hear you say!!!...we have confirmed all exhibitors for the Christmas Niche. Thanks again to the Uni, we will be in the awesome gallery space which is the best backdrop for the incredibly talented array of designers we have involved.
9, yep nine, new exhibitors including a steel object maker, a book maker, a different winery and florist, and standeliers, and if you are asking what are they well keep an eye on the blog to find out as we highlight some of the stall holders over the next couple of months.

We had over 50 applicants for 30 spots so it was not an easy process to work out who to have there...but this just goes to show the amount of people with talent in our local community. I am sorry to those that missed out - if we could fit everyone one we would...

I must say that we are really looking forward to this Niche - three days of relaxed and unique Christmas shopping - what more could anyone ask for? But for all the stall holders - it is a fantastic time to be able to meet new people who share a common bond.
